An iPhone will soon be able to send a 911 dispatcher your exact location, part of a software update that could be the difference between life and death.

Right now, when a mobile call is placed to 911, emergency responders are only given a vague idea of the caller's location.

Apple plans to address that with its next iPhone software update set to roll out in iOS 12 later this year, CNN Money reported.

The feature will zone in on a user's whereabouts by using data collected from WiFi access points, nearby cellular towers, and GPS, then send the precise location information to emergency responders in the U.S.

It’s similar to the new safety feature being included in the Uber app, which allows users to easily contact 911 and communicate their location.

The ride-hailing company has been testing the capability of RapidSOS in some cities to share the user's name, location and specific details about the Uber vehicle to 911 when the button is tapped.

RapidSOS, a startup specializing in sharing cell phone location data with U.S. emergency response departments, will be partnering up with Apple to roll out the capability in the latest iPhone software update.

The technology is readily available to allow more precise location sharing with emergency responders, but Apple noted that "outdated" infrastructure has hindered 911 centers from obtaining more accurate information about callers.

Rob McMullen, president of the National Emergency Number Association, said Apple's new feature would "accelerate the deployment of Next Generation 911 for everyone" and help to save lives while protecting property, according to The Verge.

In addition to greater safety measures, the Apple iOS 12 update could also make older devices such as the iPhone 6 work better.

Earlier this month Apple revealed that iOS 12 could carry out simple tasks, such as opening apps, up to twice as fast as its predecessor, iOS 11.

Apple also said the operating system would work on the same devices as iOS 11, a range of products that date back to 2013.
