iPad Rumors: Apple October Event to Reveal New Model for Holidays

Rumors are swirling that Apple will dish about its fifth-generation iPad and its improved features during an invitation-only event Oct. 22.

Sources told AllThingsD that the new iPad will feature a skinnier and lighter design and an improved camera. The updated iPad will likely run on a new 64-bit A7 chip.

Apple officials on Tuesday declined to comment on the details.

Slate reported that Apple may be using its considerable marketing muscle advantage with the Oct. 22 event to upstage competitors. It is the same day Microsoft starts shipping its Surface 2 tablet, and Nokia has scheduled a launch event on that day too.

AppleInsider.com reported that the iPad rumors showed a continued interest in the digital tablet market despite that sales have been tepid.

"The new iPads will hit the market ahead of the holiday shopping season, and at a time when traditional notebook PCs continued to struggle," AppleInsider.com reported. "Competition in the tablet space has been heating up, with Amazon's new Kindle Fire HDX, Microsoft's Surface 2 and Google's Nexus 7."

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White said last week that despite slow sales, Apple is pushing for more upgrades after talking with Asian suppliers.

"Apple's iPad refresh may be able to once again capitalize on a weakening PC market, as the supply chain indicated to White that notebook sales are soft," Appleinsider.com reported. "Sales of traditional PCs have been slumping as consumers have instead opted to buy tablets, with Apple's iPad lineup carrying the lion's share of the market."

CurrentEditorials.com pointed out that the Oct. 22 event could also reveal Apple's new fingerprint sensor along with other product news.

"The iPad mini will also receive an update during the October event," CurrentEditorials.com reported. "The second-generation iPad mini will come with Apple’s A6 processor, which is currently used in the iPhone 5C, and in the recently discontinued iPhone 5. What is less certain is which screen resolution the new iPad mini will utilize."
