Iowa GOP Leader Moves to Dump Judge Over Same-Sex Marriage

Thursday, 02 August 2012 12:55 PM

In a move aimed at wiping out the court that legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa, state Republican Party Chairman A.J. Spiker is urging voters to dump Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins.

In a statement, Striker said that a “no” vote on Wiggins’ retention on the November ballot would “send a strong message to the judicial branch and activist judges who may not fully understand the power that individual voters have within Iowa and our entire nation,” the Des Moines Register reported.

According to the Register, Wiggins was part of the court’s unanimous 2009 decision legalizing same-sex marriage. Since then three other judges on the court have been sent packing by voters. But the state GOP and conservatives opposed to the law have been frustrated by a Democratic-controlled state Senate in their attempts to repeal it by amending the state constitution.

Iowa Political observers and Democrats saw Striker’s move as an attempt to increase voter turnout in November to not only get rid of Wiggins but to help elect a Republican majority to the state Senate.

The Iowa State Bar Association and the state Democratic Party condemned Spiker’s call for Wiggins’ ouster as an attempt to politicize the courts. At the same time, some Republican supporters of same-sex marriage accused Spiker of using Wiggins as leverage to attract outside money and advocacy groups to support GOP legislative races.

“The fact that they’ve decided to put out a statement [on Wiggins] signals to me that there’s a lot of money that’s available now to drive this issue,” former state Sen. Jeff Angelo, a founder of Iowa Republicans for Freedom, told the Register.
“This is the starting gun of, ‘Gentlemen, bring your money,’” Angelo added.
