Instagram Live videos seek to mesh together aspects of Snapchat with Periscope with a new live streaming service that disappears after the video ends with no replays.

Instagram made the rollout announcement on its blog Monday, adding live video on Instagram Stories along with disappearing photos and videos for groups and friends on Instagram Direct.

"In August, we introduced Instagram Stories as a way to share all the moments of your day, not just the ones you want to keep on your profile," Instagram said on its blog. "We've seen stories open up a new side of what people share on Instagram, and now over 100 million people use it every day.

"Live video on Instagram Stories helps you connect with your friends and followers right now. When you're done, your live story disappears from the app so you can feel more comfortable sharing anything, anytime," the blog continues.

Tech Crunch writer Josh Constine said the service allows Instagram users to live in the moment, and he thinks it will become popular among users.

"Since the new Live and Direct content self-destructs, Instagram hopes users will be less concerned about how they look or if they're doing something cool," Constine wrote for Tech Crunch. "The features sway the balance of who Instagram is for further towards users rather than public figures and polished social media celebrities — a balance other apps get wrong."

Ad Week said that while Instagram introduced the feature this week, it will take a few weeks for it to be available for users around the world. Users will be able to message their friends about going live and will also have the option of turning comments sections off.

Instagram product manager for live Shilpa Sakar said the company discovered a tendency among its consumers, especially young people, to turn to live video for bites of day-to-day entertainment, according to Forbes.

The company said that it had been thinking about adding live video for some time to serve those needs.
