Instagram Bully Filter Introduced to Hide Harassment

Instagram is adding a bully filter meant to hide harassing comments on its popular photo-oriented social media site, the company announced Tuesday.

The tech website Engadget wrote that this appears to be an upgrade from past efforts by Instagram to tame bullying comments on its site. Instagram allowed users to create filters for blocking content featuring certain words in 2016, but it proved to be too cumbersome for many users, Engadget said.

Last year, Instagram tried again with another filter that blocked offensive comments, but that was aimed at users from frequently targeted groups, Engadget said.

"This new filter hides comments containing attacks on a person's appearance or character, as well as threats to a person's well-being or health," wrote Instagram chief executive and cofounder Kevin Systrom in an Instagram statement.

"The bullying filter is on for our global community and can be disabled in the Comment Controls center in the app. The new filter will also alert us to repeated problems so we can take action," Systrom added.

Instagram rolled out the new anti-bullying effort and other changes at the Facebook F8 conference Tuesday, including a redesigned Explore section and new options for sharing to Stories, according to the website Digital Trends.

"We are also expanding our policies to guard against bullying young public figures on our platform," Systrom continued in his Instagram statement. "Protecting our youngest community members is crucial to helping them feel comfortable to express who they are and what they care about."

Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion, the website Recode said. Since then, Instagram has exploded, growing from 30 million users to more than 600 million users in 2017, according to Recode.

The effort, though, brought mixed reactions on social media.
