Inmate Called 911 From Prison Before Being Found Dead in Cell

By    |   Friday, 31 January 2014 08:48 AM EST

An Oklahoma inmate who called 911 six times over the course of five hours last week died from injuries he sustained in an apparent prison assault when emergency services failed to help him.

Authorities at Lawton Correctional Facility discovered the body of 33-year-old Christopher Glass on the floor of his cell around 7:20 a.m. Jan. 20, the Lawton Constitution reported.

Glass reportedly had visible injuries but the medical examiner's office has not yet determined a cause of death. He was serving multiple six-year sentences for possession of a firearm after a felony conviction and possession of drugs in jail.

Call logs showed that Glass used a cell phone to call 911 six times between 8:50 p.m. Jan. 19 and 1:55 a.m. the next morning, according to the Constitution. His voice wasn't heard on the calls and most of them were quickly disconnected.

On one, though, a voice can be heard saying, "Whether or not you're a dead man. Just hang up."

It's not clear where the cell phone came from, but it was used from inside the prison, the newspaper noted.

Police Captain Craig Akard said physical fights between inmates is common but rarely do they result in death.

"You may have a group of guys involved when a skirmish starts," he told the Constitution. "Maybe the same guy gets into a fight with another the next day, but both parties walk away . . . You can't really say 'that's where the [fatal] injury occurred.'"

This isn’t the first time an Oklahoma inmate has called 911 in recent months. Back in September, an inmate being transported from a hospital back to jail in Oklahoma City called police to report that a group of prisoners had escaped from the van.
