A 2-year-old Indianapolis toddler apparently climbed up on a kitchen counter, took a handgun from his mother's purse and ended up killing himself, according to police.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said they received a call about a 2-year-old being shot about 9 p.m. Wednesday and found the boy with a gunshot wound to the chest when they arrived, said WTTV.

The child was unresponsive and taken to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health where he was pronounced dead

The child, identified as Kiyan Shelton, climbed the kitchen counter and removed the gun from his 23-year-old mother's purse while she had "momentarily stepped away," police told the Indianapolis Star

The mother, who was the only person home at the time of the shooting, had a valid gun permit for the .380 Bersa semi-automatic pistol.

"It's hard to believe that this could potentially occur to such a young person," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Troy Riggs told WTTV. "And I did not realize that this could occur until I had a gun safety class and they showed demonstrations of what young children can do with weapons. It's remarkably scary, I will be quite frank. Never underestimate a child’s ability to fire a weapon no matter how young they are."

The shooting remained under investigation Thursday, Capt. Richard Riddle told the Star.

"Upon completion of their investigation, they will present their findings for a charging decision," Riddle said. "The mother fully cooperated with the investigation and was released last night.

"At this point, this appears to be a tragic accident, but the (Marion County prosecutor's office) will have final decision making on whether there were any criminal culpability in this incident," he added.

In February, a 6-year-old in Hartsville, Indiana, southeast of Indianapolis near Columbus, accidently shot and killed his father after picking up a gun, reported WXIN-TV. Authorities said James Lonaker, 62, died of a gunshot wound to his upper body after his son picked up a .38 caliber revolver and fired a shot.
