Indianapolis Airport Best, Newark Airport among Worst in North America

A worldwide airports group has named the Indianapolis International Airport the best airport in North America for the second time since 2010.

Indianapolis Airport was deemed the most hassle-free transportation hub of 2012 by the Airports Council International in their yearly Airport Service Quality Awards, beating out high-ranking airports in Ottawa and Tampa. In 2011, Indianapolis came in second.

"Being the best airport in North America wouldn't be possible without world-class employees," Robert Duncan, executive director for the Indianapolis Airport Authority, said in a statement. "I am proud of their dedication, and I especially thank our front-line staff who greet our guests and keep our facilities clean, safe, and operational around the clock."

Indianapolis airport spokesman Carlo Bertolini told IndyStar.com the annual awards program conducts year-round passenger satisfaction surveys at gate areas and tallies the results to get the winners.

Other top regional airports include Cape Town International Airport in South Africa, Seoul Incheon International Airport in South Korea, and Abu Dhabi International Airport in the Middle East.

Though Indianapolis takes the title of best airport, one that often makes the worst list is Newark Liberty International Airport. A former Newark TSA agent told the New York Post this week what really goes on behind the scenes — sleeping on the job, perverted security screens, and lots of goofing off.

"Did you know you don't need a high-school diploma or GED to work as a security screener?" the agent wrote. "These are the same screeners that TSA chief John Pistole and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano refer to as a first-class first line of defense in the war on terror. These are the employees who could never keep a job in the private sector. I wouldn't trust them to walk my dog."
