India's movie theaters must play the national anthem before motion picture movie showings to encourage patriotism, the country's highest court ruled Wednesday.

The country's Supreme Court also directed moviegoers to stand while the anthem is being played in the movie house, according to The Guardian. The newspaper said the court was responding to public litigation that said that the country's national anthem was routinely being dishonored.

"All the cinema halls in India shall play the national anthem before the feature film starts and all present in the hall are obliged to stand up to show respect to the national anthem (as a part of their) sacred obligation," the court ruling said, according to the Indian Express.

Supreme Court Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy said the movie screen should include an image of the national flag and cinema doors remain closed during its playing, the Indian Express noted.

"The directions are issued, for love and respect for the motherland is reflected when one shows respect to the national anthem as well as to the national flag," the ruling said, per the Indian Express. "That apart, it would instill the feeling within one, a sense committed patriotism and nationalism."

The court said movie houses will be given 10 days to comply with the ruling.

NDTV reported that movie theaters had traditionally played the anthem after movies in the 1960s, but the practice faded away over the years as people would often walk out during its playing.

The broadcaster stated, though, that standing in the theater for the anthem had long been debated.

NDTV wrote that some have raised questions about theater exits being closed during the national anthem in cases of emergencies like fire. Attorneys have said that people moving in the theater during the anthem has been interpreted as sign of disrespect.
