A government-run mass sterilization program in India left at least 11 women dead and more than 60 others hospitalized.

The women were among 83 who went to a mobile clinic Saturday in the Bilaspur district in the state of Chhattisgarh, CNN reported.

The women all were poor villagers were paid to undergo the surgeries, The Associated Press said.

The death toll was fluid on Tuesday, with many reports saying eight women had died and others placing the death toll at 11. Reports also differed on the price paid to the women for undergoing the surgery, with reports varying from $10 to $23.

The doctor who performed the surgeries, R.K. Gupta, failed to disinfect the surgical instruments and breached guidelines that limit surgeons to no more than 30 procedures a day, Bloomberg News reported.

Amar Singh Thakur, chief health officer for Bilaspur district said: “The deaths were due to infection causing septic shock. We are investigating but it is too early to say that it was due to sterilization,” Bloomberg reported.

Sterilization drives are common in the nation of 1.2 billion people, which is trying to control population growth. Women often are paid to undergo the tubectomies.

Soon after Saturday’s procedures, which were completed by one doctor and an assistant in a period of about six hours, women began complaining of pain and fever, the BBC reported.

Four health officials have been suspended, including a doctor who won a government award last year for having conducted 50,000 sterilizations.

The victims' families are expected to receive compensation payments of about $6,600 to each from the state, the AP said.

Twitter users expressed horror.
