Illinois is suing Uber over a year-old data breach that affected millions of users and drivers, NBC Chicago reported.

A joint lawsuit was filed on behalf of Illinois and the city of Chicago on Monday, seeking to hold the ride sharing company accountable for a 2016 breach that exposed the data of 57 million customers and drivers worldwide.

According to The Chicago Tribune, Uber disclosed the data breach last week and said the company paid out $100,000 in an effort to silence hackers from exposing the breach to the public.

Central to the lawsuit are claims that Uber failed to protect its data and, once the breach occurred, actively went out of its way to conceal this.

"We filed this lawsuit because Uber must be held accountable for its actions which have made its customers vulnerable to identity theft, fraud, and other abuse," said Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, according to WLS-TV. "Consumers expect and deserve protection from disclosure of their personal information. I am committed to ensuring that those who don't follow these laws cannot simply sweep it under the rug."

The lawsuit alleges that Uber experienced a smaller data breach in 2014 and, although the company vowed to update its security practices in order to meet industry standards, it failed to do so, leading to the 2016 breach, NBC Chicago noted.

Chicago Corporation Counsel Ed Siskel, who filed the complaint in conjunction with Foxx, said that companies should not be permitted to violate the law by "failing to safeguard personal information and then covering it up, preventing those impacted from taking steps to protect themselves," the station reported.

Uber spokeswoman Molly Spaeth responded in a statement, according to The Chicago Tribune, noting that the ride sharing company was "committed to changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make, and working hard to regain the trust of consumers."
