IKEA Charging Furniture Juices Up Your Phone While You Sleep

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Mar 2015 07:16 AM

IKEA's new charging furniture was made for everyone who keeps forgetting to connect their phones to the charger at night before bedtime.

The Swedish furniture maker introduced the new collection of tables, desks and lamps with built-in energy induction transfer charging pads at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"People hate cable mess," said IKEA's Jeanette Skjelmose. "They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power."

The furniture will have to be plugged into its own power source, of course.

IKEA officials said the furniture should be available in Europe and North American by April 15 with a worldwide debut at a later date, noted the Journal.

Such new furniture comes with new problems, such as recycling some environmentalists pointed out to the BBC News.

"A key principle that manufacturers of furniture with built-in wireless charging technology should consider is that the furniture is designed to be easy to disassemble for upgrade, reuse, repair or recycling," said Julian Kirby, resource use campaigner at Friends of the Earth.

"Disposable electric toothbrushes are one example of a terrible product design in those respects. It's virtually impossible to separate out the tech from the batteries and plastic casing which means valuable and often toxic materials are dumped in landfill or burnt in incinerators," said Kirby.

IKEA told BBC News that it would be "easy to fraction" the wireless charger from the furniture at the end of furniture's use and "by adding wireless charging to home and office furniture, we minimize the amount of separate chargers needed."

Dante D'Orazio of The Verge.com noted that another problem comes with the different charging standards – the new IKEA furniture will support Wireless Power Consortium, building Qi wireless device chargers, which will work with LG, G3 and Nexus 6 devices, but may be incompatible with Power Matters Alliance supported devices.

"So there's no guarantee that your IKEA furniture will work with your next smartphone, but that's why they call it the bleeding edge, right?" wrote D'Orazo.
