IIHS crash tests for 2018 resulted in two top-selling SUVs earning poor ratings for passenger-side small overlap front crash tests.

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2018 Ford Explorer both received poor ratings on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests.

Front crashes on the passenger side caused 1,606 deaths in the U.S in 2016, and a 2009 IIHS study led to an estimate of 725 annual U.S. fatalities in passenger-side small overlap crashes and 1,675 on the driver’s side.

“These are vehicles that we hadn’t rated on the passenger side before, and as we add more tests to our battery of evaluations, we try to keep up current ratings for the vehicles that people are the most interested in buying,” IIHS Chief Research Officer David Zuby said, Autoweek reported.

The Ford Explorer had poor ratings for structural performance and a marginal rating for the driver-side small overlap test.

Ford said in a statement, “Explorer is a safe vehicle and has earned the highest 5-star overall NCAP ratings in the U.S. as well as ‘good’ ratings in front and side IIHS crash test modes. We fully expect next year’s all-new 2020 Explorer will perform well on both SORB test and other tests,” Autoweek reported.

The 2019 Kia Sorento, 2018 Hundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport all earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. The 2018 Honda Pilot, 2018 Sorento, 2018 Mazda CX-9, and Toyota Highlander all earned Top Safety Pick ratings.

The Grand Cherokee and Explorer’s designs were both older and are expected to be updated with better safety in the next year or two, CNet reported.
