ICE arrests in a five-state Midwest sweep last week included 78 suspected illegal immigrants, Fox News reported.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested suspects in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota during the six-day effort. Iowa and Nebraska each accounted for 25 arrests.

There were 15 arrests in Minnesota, followed by 10 in South Dakota and three in North Dakota, Fox said.

"This operation targeted criminal aliens, public safety threats, and individuals who have violated our nation's immigration laws," said Peter Berg, field office director for ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Berg said 35 illegal immigrants from Mexico were arrested, making up nearly half of captures. Other countries connected with the arrest include El Salvador (15), Guatemala (11), Honduras (10), Ethiopia (2), South Sudan (2), Kenya (1), Ivory Coast (1), and Sudan (1.

Sergio Sosa, executive director of the Heartland Workers Center in Omaha, complained to the Omaha World-Herald that the raids cause fear among immigrants who are in the country legally.

"They feel that fear, that exercising the right to vote, might (draw attention to) a relative or a friend that might not have the proper documentation," Sosa told the newspaper, adding that some legal immigrants are fearful about taking jobs and doing other activities.

ICE pointed to the numerous arrests as an example of its success, including the capture of a Mexican national, 20, in St. Paul who was an admitted gang member and had been deported four previous times, a South Sudan man, 32, arrested in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for rape, and a Honduras man, 49, arrested in Omaha, who had convictions for DUI, carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct.
