An IBM computer can now debate humans — and win — giving artificial intelligence one-up in the power of persuasion, CNET reported.

It all went down on Monday in San Francisco, when IBM pitted its system called Project Debater against two human debaters known for their ability to win their arguments.

In one debate, Project Debater nudged nine audience members toward its stance that the use of telemedicine should be increased.

While the system was trained in debating methods prior to Monday, it did not receive any information about the debate until moments before, CNET said.

Its argument was based on 300 million news articles and scholarly papers, which the system had to access and package into a persuasive argument.

Project Debater responds within certain parameters and, according to The Verge, at certain points it did not directly engage the criteria set forth by its human opponent.

Jeff Welser, the vice president and lab director for IBM research at Almaden, explained that this was because there was "no effort to actually have it play tricky or dissembling games."

Instead, he noted that the system "does actually do exactly what a human does, but it does it within its limitations."

IBM has been working on Project Debater for six years and hopes to eventually develop a more sophisticated virtual assistant, The Guardian noted.

Chris Reed, a professor at the Centre for Argument Technology at the University of Dundee, who attended the debate noted that the system could ultimately increase the level of evidence-based decision-making and be used for intelligence analysis in counter-terrorism.

"It helps the public understand where the state of the art is, which means panics about the imminent robot apocalypse might be tempered a little bit," he said.

The world was astounded when in 1997, the program Deep Blue played chess against the human world champ and defeated him.

Since then AI has taken an incredible leap into the debating arena and come out on top.
