An I-94 pileup near Hartford, Michigan, involving 17 trucks and 12 cars closed the road westbound through early afternoon Friday as a result of heavy lake effect snow in the area.

The crash happened at about 9:20 a.m. as snow was falling in the area of mile marker 45 in west Michigan, Click on Detroit reported. At least one person was pinned in his vehicle and there are an unknown number of other injuries related to the crash.

Photos showed at least one vehicle pinned between the guardrail and a large truck, as well as many other stopped cars and trucks that were involved in the crash. About an inch of freshly fallen snow could be seen on the ground.

The pileup was cleared shortly before 1 p.m. and I-94 westbound was reopened, Mlive.com reported.

Police reminded drivers to reduce speeds and allow more space between vehicles during times of snow and other inclement weather to prevent crashes, WSBT reported

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office assisted the state police in responding to the scene of the crash, Click on Detroit reported.

Twitter users commented on the crash and others like it that have happened periodically in heavy snow.
