Hyperloop Technologies, the cutting-edge transportation startup, will conduct testing of its high-speed trains in the Nevada desert starting next year, the company announced Tuesday.

"This decision represents another major milestone in our journey to bring Hyperloop to commercial reality," said CEO Rob Lloyd, according to Fortune magazine

"Hyperloop Technologies will invest first in regions where we receive government advocacy to move fast," he added.

Hyperloop partnered with the Nevada Office of Economic Development and City of North Las Vegas to secure 50 acres of land in Apex Industrial Park for the testing.

"As a state, we are working diligently to attract and grow innovative companies and technologies that advance industries of all kinds," said Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. "Through this exciting announcement by Hyperloop Tech and its selection of Apex Industrial Park for its Propulsion Open Air Test, Nevada is thrilled to be playing a role in the critical testing of its innovative advanced technologies."

According to a statement by the company, "Hyperloop is a transportation system in which a full-length tube is built between destinations, with a controlled environment inside the tube allowing people or cargo to travel at extremely fast speeds."

In Nevada, the Propulsion Open Air Test will take place on a track roughly 1 kilometer in length. On that track, electric test motors will be run at speeds around 335 miles per hour.

As the Los Angeles times reported this week, the Hyperloop concept was outlined by Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, roughly two years ago.

In addition to Hyperloop Technologies, which has raised $37 million so far, another company, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, is planning a test site in California's Central Valley.

Musk has also said he's helping to create a test track in Texas.
