A pastor who was hunting with a coyote call was killed Monday after another hunter thought he saw a coyote in a nearby tree and shot at it, striking the man instead.

Michael Seth Marsh, 26, was the pastor of Russell Gap Baptist Church near Taylorsville, North Carolina. Matthew Dunn of Taylorsville has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the killing, which took place just before 6 p.m. on Monday in the woods outside Taylorsville, the Charlotte Observer reported

Investigators said Marsh was wearing camouflage and was set up on the ground near a tree with a shotgun, using an electronic coyote caller, when he was shot, according to the Taylorsville Times.

WSOCTV reported Marsh was wearing an orange hat but that his hood was covering it when he was shot.

Dunn, who lives nearby, told police he heard coyotes screaming in the area and shot “something brown and gray” that he saw in the brush with an AR-15, the Observer reported. Marsh yelled at Dunn to stop shooting and that Dunn hit him. Dunn then went to Marsh’s aid, calling 911 when he realized he had shot Marsh.

Marsh died at the hospital a few hours later.

Dunn, 31, was charged with involuntary manslaughter even though investigators believe the shooting was an accident. He was given $75,000 bail and will appear Monday in court, the Observer reported.

Marsh leaves behind a wife, Katy, and two children. A memorial fund was set up to help the family.

“It’s sad to say that he will not see his little boy play sports or get to see his daughter walk down the aisle one day,” a member of his church, Coy Pearson, said, WSOCTV reported.
