Hugo Pinell, one of the infamous "San Quentin Six," was killed in a Wednesday prison riot that involved 70 inmates at a California prison.

It was apparently the stabbing of Pinell by two inmates that set off the riot at California State Prison - Sacramento, which lasted 20 minutes and left 29 injured, many with stab wounds, Reuters reported. Eleven were transported to a hospital, and on Thursday, one remained in critical condition.

Pinell, 71, was well-known for his part in an attempted prison break in August 1971 from the San Quentin State Prison that left three prison officers and three inmates dead. One of those who died was George Jackson, founder of the Black Guerilla Family, a prison gang that The Los Angeles Times said "played a controversial role as a radical faction for civil rights."

Pinell was originally sent to prison for life with parole after being found guilty of rape, the Times reported. He received another life sentence for killing a prison officer; a third life sentence came after he became one of the "San Quentin Six" and slit the throats of two prison officers. In total, he was serving six life sentences at the time of his death.

The California Department of Corrections said in a news release that prison officers "used pepper spray, less-than-lethal force options, and at least two warning shots from the Mini-14." The fight broke out about 1 p.m. Wednesday in a maximum-security general population yard, and inmates used multiple homemade weapons.

Pinell was honored by some as a political prisoner, and many were angry over the decades he spent in solitary confinement. Many went online to express their sadness at his passing.
