Close to 500 HP laptop models bought over the last five years contain a deactivated keylogger that could give hackers the ability to track everything users type.

The keylogger was discovered by security researcher Michael Myng in software drivers that came installed on the laptops within Synaptics keypad software, the BBC reported.

HP has made a software patch available so customers can remove the keylogger.

HP said the keylogger was present on more than 460 models of its laptops and that it was put there to allow technicians access to the software to fix potential problems and debug errors, the BBC reported.

A “loss of confidentiality” was possible, HP admitted, but the keylogger was set to be disabled by default and would have had to be activated by a hacker during an attack.

No customer data was given to HP or Synaptics as a result of the keylogger, the BBC reported.

Business Insider reported hackers would need to have physical access to the laptop to activate the keylogger, which could then give them access to sensitive information such as passwords and financial information by recording everything that is typed on the laptop.

The HP support page for the software patch said the bug may be present on “all Synaptics OEM partners,” which suggested other laptop brands that use Synaptics also may have the keylogger, BI reported.

A keylogger was found on HP laptop audio drivers in May, the BBC reported.
