Howard Kurtz Bashes Jason Collins in Error on Engagement (Video)

Media critic Howard Kurtz took aim at gay NBA player Jason Collins Wednesday, accusing him of not "coming clean" about once being engaged to a woman, even though that fact was plainly stated in the Sports Illustrated article announcing Collins' sexuality earlier this week.

In a Daily Beast blog post and video blog Wednesday, Kurtz criticized Collins, who came out Monday on the cover of Sports Illustrated, for not disclosing that he was once engaged to former WNBA player Carolyn Moos, whom he dated for seven years.

"He had always struggled with being gay, the NBA player said to Sports Illustrated and George Stephanopoulos, drawing rave reviews for his candor and a congratulatory call from President Obama," Kurtz wrote. "Except that he left out one little part. He was engaged. To be married. To a woman."

"He didn't tell the whole story. He says, 'I'm gay, I've always been gay,'" Kurtz said in the video blog Wednesday. "If you leave out the fact that you dated this woman for eight years and that you were engaged to be married, then you have not told the whole story and I think this really muddies the whole plotline."

Kurtz failed to realize that Collins did, in fact, acknowledge his past relationship with Moos. It's right there in the eighth paragraph of the Sports Illustrated story.

"When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged," Collins wrote. "I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue."

Twitter users slammed Kurtz for making such an erroneous accusation.

The Daily Beast post has since been edited and now reads that Collins "downplayed one detail." The word "hidden" has also been deleted from the headline.

Kurtz issued a half-apology Wednesday night, while still maintaining that Collins "didn’t tell the full story."
