Hostages at a Burger King in Baltimore were slowly freed Sunday while a rape suspect in a standoff there with police negotiated his surrender, reported WBAL-TV.

The armed suspect barged into the fast-food restaurant about 11 a.m. while being chased by police and took four people hostage, including a 7-year-old girl, police told WBAL-TV. The man was wanted for an alleged rape that happened in the last 24-48 hours, said a police spokesman.

The other hostages were a 67-year-old man, the store's manager, 25, and an employee, 17. The Baltimore Police SWAT team arrived, along with negotiators, and surrounded the restaurant.

Some of the suspect's family members talked with him as part of the police negotiations, reported the Baltimore Sun, Police said the man released the 17-year-old about 1:45 p.m. and the 67-year-old at 2:20 p.m.

The suspect surrendered about 4:40 p.m. and released the last two hostages.

"He made the decision to do the right thing and that was not to harm anyone," a police spkoesman told the Sun. "He absolutely had the opportunity to do so, but he chose not to do so."

The spokesman declined to identify the suspect.

Authorities did not give any details about the rape allegation.

Keysha MacKall, mother of the 7-year-old girl, identified as Kamya Commander, told the Sun that her daughter was not harmed in the ordeal.

"It's been like hell," MacKall said. "My nerves was all over the place. ... I'm just glad she's fine. She's here."

Ryan Weinberger, 29, told the Sun he managed to escape out a side door of the restaurant with two others while the suspect was inside.

"One of the customers grabbed me and said, 'Get out — run,'" Weinberger said.
