A recall of nearly 2,000 pounds of Skippy Peanut Butter suspected of containing metal shavings was announced on Thursday by Hormel Food Sales.

In all, 153 cases of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread, totaling 1,871 pounds, is involved in the voluntary recall, company officials said in a statement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A Hormel official told Reuters that metal shavings got in the jars because of malfunctioning equipment. The equipment has since been identified and repaired.

The metal shavings were found during an inline magnet check during routine cleaning, said Hormel. The company warned that objects that are greater than seven millimeters could cause choking by obstructing the airway, gastrointestinal peroration or secondary infection.

Hormel said the recall involves 16.3-ounce jars with a "Best If Used By" date of DEC1416LR1 along with the package UPC code of 37600-10500. The company said consumers can find the code date on top of the lid.

The recalled Skippy product was delivered to distribution centers for Publix, Target and Walmart in Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and Arkansas.

Hormel said there have been no reports of consumer injuries or complaints from the product so far. The company said customers can return the recalled product to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or they can contact Hormel Foods customer relations at 1-866-475-4779.
