Hope Hicks: 5 Things to Know About Interim White House Comms Director

Hope Hicks has been tapped as the interim White House Communications Director, according to a White House statement issued Wednesday.

"Hope Hicks will work with White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and all of the communications team and serve as the interim White House communications director," the statement said. "We will make an announcement on a permanent communications director at the appropriate time."

Here are five things to know about Hope Hicks:

1. She's not new to the administration — Hicks, 28, previously served as White House director of strategic communications. Before that, she worked as press secretary for Trump's presidential campaign. Her promotion to interim communications director comes after Trump fired Anthony Scaramucci in July, just 10 days after he was appointed for the role.

2. She has a background in PR — Before her initial role in the White House, Hicks worked at a powerful New York public relations firm in 2012. It was there that she met Ivanka Trump and began working on Ivanka’s luxury fashion line. The two developed a friendship and successful working relationship and Trump hired Hicks to work within the Trump Organization as press secretary in 2014.

According to a New York Times profile on Hicks in June 2016, she quickly went on to earn Donald Trump’s trust as his “confidante” and was called to his office in early 2015 and offered a place in his campaign office.

3. She keeps a low public profile — Hicks is known to maintain a low profile on social media and in the public space, with many journalists and people commenting on her lack of public presence in spite of her role in communications.

This quality could come in handy as the interim comms director. Scaramucci was fired for spouting off on a profanity laced tirade to a reporter about his colleagues.

4. She's just getting started— In January 2017, Forbes released its “30 Under 30” list and named Hicks one of the “dynamos and politicos” that are set to shape “law and policy in Trump’s America.” In Hicks’ video feature for the “30 Under 30” profile, she sang Trump’s praises and explained the challenges and merits of working in the White House press office.

5. She helped craft Trump's address to the joint session of Congress — According to the New York Times, Hicks is reported to be one of three women who played a part in developing Trump’s speech to Congress back in February. Trump’s previous press conferences were often notoriously controversial, in stark contrast to this instance where, according to NBC News, he took on a softer, “more conciliatory tone.”
