"Hillbilly Elegy" author J.D. Vance has been quietly approached by top Senate Republicans to run for the Ohio U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democratic liberal Sherrod Brown, Politico reported on Monday.

Three sources told Politico that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has talked with Vance about the Senate run after GOP candidate Josh Mandel dropped out last week, reportedly because of health issues with his wife.

Many had assumed a Brown-Mandel rematch after Brown edged Mandel, Ohio's state treasurer, by 330,000 votes to win his second term in the Senate in 2012, according to The Hill.

Politico said McConnell had told associates he would make the Ohio race a priority if Vance announced he would run against Brown. The publication said establishment Republicans, though, are not as sure as McConnell about Vance as the favored candidate in the race.

Ohio U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci is also still thinking about a run against Brown and Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has talked with Renacci about the race, Politico reported.

Ohio's Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and retiring U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi have decided not to run against Brown.

Last month, Vance told CBS News that many Americans in the middle of the country will become "politically frustrated" and have their "hopes dashed" if the economy and wages don't significantly improve, as President Trump has said they will.

"When the president talks about tax reform, he talks about the people who will benefit," Vance told CBS News. "He talks about American jobs. He talks about the fact that we're going to be taking money that's overseas and bringing it back to the United States so that it will employ American workers. I think that focus again on the American working and middle class is- is-is to me the most thoughtful and, in some ways, the most genius part of Trump's approach to politics."
