Hillary Clinton Miniseries Planned by NBC Before 2016 Election

By    |   Monday, 29 July 2013 09:13 AM EDT

The entertainment industry has doubled down on Hillary Rodham Clinton after NBC announced it is planning a miniseries on the former first lady and secretary of state likely to precede the 2016 presidential election.

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told The Associated Press and other media about the miniseries at a meeting of the Television Critics Association. This comes on the heels of a movie focused on Clinton's early years being written by Young Il Kim.

Actress Diane Lane has been attached to the four-hour miniseries, playing Clinton, according to the AP. Carey Mulligan is rumored to be line to play Clinton in the movie, which is also scheduled to come out before the 2016 election, said the Huffington Post.

Clinton is expected to be a Democratic Party candidate in the 2016 election where there won't be an incumbent.

Greenblatt said at the critics meeting that the miniseries is part of NBC's effort to create "event" programming to attract viewers. Greenblatt said broadcasting audiences are shrinking by four to seven percent annually.

"We need to be in the event business," said Greenblatt. "I think you're going to hear that from every broadcast network. Anything that can shake up the landscape and say 'we have something special.'"

Greenblatt didn't address how such a miniseries, which will track Clinton's life and career from 1998 to the present, might affect the presidential contest. He said the role of former President Bill Clinton has not been filled.

Lane currently plays Superman's earthbound mother Martha Kent in the summer blockbuster "Man of Steel." She has also starred in the movies "Unfaithful," "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Secretariat" and "The Perfect Storm," according to IMDb.com.

Along with the Clinton miniseries, Greenblatt announced NBC will air a reboot of "Rosemary's Baby," a four-hour version of the Ira Levin novel that was adapted as a 1968 movie. NBC will also adapt "Stephen King's Tommyknockers," and air Mark Burnett's "Plymouth," about the Pilgrim's journey and settlement in America.
