Hilary Duff is apologizing after her scantily-clad pilgrim Halloween costume and her boyfriend Jason Walsh as an Indian created controversy.
The actress and Walsh dressed up as a pilgrim and Native American as they attended the annual Casamigos Halloween party in Los Angeles on Friday, ABC News reported.
“I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume. It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my heart sorry,” Duff tweeted on Sunday.
Walsh also offered an apology on his Instagram page in the aftermath of the backlash, ABC News noted.
“I meant no disrespect. I only have admiration for the indigenous people of America. In hindsight I would not have made that decision. I apologize to anyone I may have offended,” the post read.
Native American costumes have been frowned upon by many, as people have complained about the culture being appropriated.
The costumes also warranted some backlash due to the current Dakota Access Pipeline controversy, which is evident by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe reservation in North Dakota, The Huffington Post noted.
On Twitter, the costumes were referred to as “ignorant,” “racist,” and “out of touch,” according to USA Today.
