Heritage College, a for-profit institution that offered training in healthcare and other fields, closed its doors abruptly Nov. 1, citing lack of finances and lowered demand for its programs.

The college operated 10 campuses in Ohio, Colorado, Florida, California, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas.

According to The Associated Press, students found out about closure when they went to class and found an announcement taped to the door. Graduation was coming up soon, leaving many students without a degree after spending thousands of dollars on tuition.

A statement on the Heritage College website read in part:

Heritage College educated students for health care careers for 30 years, and [its closure] is very difficult news for everyone affected particularly our students, teachers, and staff.

The reason for the campus closures is that Heritage does not have the cash to continue to run its business.

Numerous factors contributed to the circumstances including declining student population and a continued, decreased demand for the services of for-profit schools. Heritage did not close due to wrongdoing or a forced closure by a regulatory body, and we did explore a range of options that would have enabled the campuses to remain open serving students. Unfortunately, the options were not viable and our efforts proved unsuccessful.

In October, the Obama administration announced help for students with loans if they were victims of fraud or misrepresentation, so it's possible Heritage students may be able to get their loans forgiven if they did not graduate.

Rochelle Bara of Florida already had a job lined up after her November graduation and now isn’t sure she will be able to get licensed, she told 9 News.

Heritage College's abrupt closure comes on the heels of other for-profit colleges that shut down this year, including ITT Tech, Wright Career College, and Brown Mackie College.
