By    |   Friday, 20 September 2013 01:10 PM EDT

The Hello Kitty jet completed its maiden voyage Wednesday from Taiwan to Los Angeles, where the plane featuring the well-known Japanese character received a red-carpet welcome.

The aircraft, a Boeing 777 designed and operated by the Taiwan-based EVA Air, features a mural of 19 Hello Kitty characters along its body, as well as a cabin totally outfitted with Hello Kitty-themed amenities. Everything — from the food to the toilet paper, the soap to the air-sick bags — is imprinted with the iconic cat.

K.W. Chang, EVA Air's chairman, said his company launched the Hello Kitty jet to "bridge cultural barriers and invite new friendships from around the world."

It will be used on three of the airline's 17 weekly flights between Taipei and Los Angeles, according to NBC News.

"You either love it or hate it," Raymond Kollau of Airlinetrends.com told NBC. "EVA Air has tapped into this cultural phenomenon in a clever way in order to get noticed. ... Many parents looking to book a ticket will be happy to book a flight on the Hello Kitty express as it will keep the kids occupied during the flight."
