Helen Mirren will appear in the action road film "Fast and Furious 8," the esteemed British actress confirmed to Elle magazine
, but only if she can drive.
The 70-year-old actress told the magazine that she accepted the role on one condition: "I said, 'I'll be in it, but only if I'm allowed to drive if I do drive in it.' But we'll see. We'll see how it transpires."
The movie also will feature Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron and Jason Statham.
The franchise confirmed the Mirren's involvement on Twitter.
Mirren described her desire to join the "Fast and Furious" franchise last year, telling Yahoo! Movies
it was her "great ambition."
"I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie," said Mirren. "My claim to fame is I always do my own driving — I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I’ll be in Fast and Furious 8. I have to say Vin Diesel is brilliant. I love Vin Diesel. He’s a great guy, smart — I love him. It’s partly because of him I’d like to be in one, but also the driving."
Vin Diesel later told Access Hollywood
that he would welcome Mirren's involvement.
"Of course I would! Who wouldn't? It’s Helen. Amazing," he said.
The franchise began in 2001 and has seen growing success with its most recent moving making more than $1.5 billion worldwide, the BBC
Mirren most recently appeared in "Eye in the Sky" as Colonel Katherine Powell, a British military commander leading a drone operation in Kenya.
"I thought it was a very wonderful, nuanced, interesting war movie," Mirren told Elle of her decision to participate in the film. "Women don't get asked to be in war movies very much, let alone play the lead in a way."
Mirren's involvement in "Fast and Furious" sparked interested among Twitter users.
