A deep-sea “headless chicken monster” was filmed swimming in the ocean waters near the Antarctica, and the name conjuring an image of a foreboding monster lurking in the watery depths sort of matches video footage released on Sunday.

The unusual creature in question, though, is a sea cucumber, Enypniastes eximia, which is commonly likened to a “headless chicken monster.”

“It looks a bit like a chicken just before you put it in oven,” said Dirk Welsford, the program leader for the Australian Antarctic Division, according to The New York Times.

There are around 1,250 known species of these animals, which are from the same family as starfish and sea urchins, and they are all ocean dwellers, National Geographic reported.

These sea cucumbers tend to live on or near the ocean floor and have only ever been filmed in the Gulf of Mexico.

That all changed when the Australian Antarctic Division dropped an underwater camera system developed for commercial long-line fishing into the Southern Ocean waters off East Antarctica.

Welsford explained the camera has been gathering data that is then fed into the international body managing the Southern Ocean, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

The “headless chicken monster” was just one of hundreds of species captured by the camera.

“Some of the footage we are getting back from the cameras is breathtaking, including species we have never seen in this part of the world,” Welsford said. “Most importantly, the cameras are providing important information about areas of sea floor that can withstand this type of fishing, and sensitive areas that should be avoided.”

Welsford said the cameras could contribute towards sustainability.

“It’s a really simple and practical solution which is directly contributing to improving sustainable fishing practices."
