Harvard’s prestigious Fox Club has revoked the provisional membership of nine women it previously admitted and reverted to all-male in its membership.

The Fox Club, with alumni including T.S. Eliot and Bill Gates, admitted the women in 2015 under pressure from the school’s administration to make all clubs coed, NBC News reported. Club members remain for life, and the club is run by a graduate board.

The graduate board failed to get the two-thirds majority needed to become coed, but admitted the women anyway to comply with rules announcing sanctions against students who become members of single-gender groups, which are set to take effect in the fall 2017 semester, NBC News reported.

Only four of the 23 single-gender clubs on campus had become gender-neutral since the announcement, NBC reported. In 1983, nine all-male organizations broke official ties with the school in order to avoid admitting women. Until the late 1970s, Harvard itself was single gender, admitting only men.

Surprisingly, many women do not support the administration’s plan to force all clubs to become gender-neutral because they fear losing leadership opportunities they have through female-only clubs, according to USA Today.

“(If) all the clubs went coed, there is a distinct possibility female clubs will die out,” wrote three prominent female Harvard alumnae in an op-ed to the student newspaper The Harvard Crimson. “The support systems, safe spaces, and alumnae networks the women’s clubs have been striving to build will disappear. That strikes us as a tremendous waste, and an ironic one, given Harvard’s stated goals.”
