Harry Potter Play Coming to London; Rowling Will Co-Produce

A Harry Potter play based on the hugely successful seven-part book series will reportedly be coming to a London stage within the next two years.

The Daily Mail reported that the Harry Potter play will not be written by J. K. Rowling. Rather, the author will co-produce the performance and collaborate with a playwright tasked with adapting it to the stage.

The play will tell "the previously untold story of Harry Potter’s early years as an orphan and outcast" and will be steered by prominent London and New York producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, the Mail reported.

In an email acquired by the Mail from the Owl Post — the system through which fans receive news alerts related to the book series — the play adaptation is said to "offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom destiny has plans."

Warner Bros., the studio behind the eight Harry Potter movies produced between 2001 and 2011, is reportedly behind the stage venture.
Rowling, who has been approached multiple times about adapting her series for the stage, said in the Owl Post piece that Friedman and Callender's vision for the play "was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity, and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry’s story to the stage.

"After a year in gestation, it is very exciting to see this project moving onto the next phrase," Rowling added.

Friedman co-produced Broadway's "The Book Of Mormon" musical, while Callender is known for producing the play "Lucky Guy," starring Tom Hanks, and several television dramas in England, the Mail noted.

In addition to the play, Rowling is also involved in a film spinoff of the popular fantasy series that is set in New York City 70 years before Potter's arrival at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The screenplay for the film, which was announced in October, will reportedly be written by Rowling and focus on a character called Newt Scamander, the man who penned Potter's textbook "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" in Rowling's original series, the Los Angeles Times reported.
