Erika Shoolbred says her new hairdryer unexpectedly turned into a blowtorch the first time she tried to use it Monday, shooting flames and causing a small burn to her hand and a bad smell in her bathroom.

Shoolbred, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, posted about the ordeal on Facebook after the Amazon seller she purchased it from didn’t respond to her complaints about the product.

“Talk about a bad hair day! she wrote. “My new hair dryer (more like hair fryer) from OraCorp on Amazon.com became a blow torch on its first use this morning.”

Shoolbred says she moved the hair dryer away from her head when she heard the motor slow down, and when she tried to turn it on again, flames shot out of it, Fox8 reported. She reportedly burned her hand unplugging it when it would not turn off to stop the flames, then she plunged the unplugged dryer in water to put out the flames.

Amazon did refund her account for the purchase and has removed the hair dryer listing from the website, the New York Post reported.

While many of the commenters on Facebook were sympathetic to her story, some were skeptical that the hair dryer could have caught on fire like Shoolbred claims it did.

“The metal in hair dryers won’t produce a flame like this at temperatures found even in a malfunctioning hair dryer,” Marc Squires posted, adding that burning plastic produces a lot of black smoke.

Sarah Thrasher wrote, “The media will really eat up anything. You’re not showing the back of the hairdryer because that’s where you’re holding the fuel source making the fire possible.”

“Considering you’re a Director of Information Services for a school district, I would be inclined to suspect this as a social media experiment,” Vaughn Winkler reasoned.
