Guns N' Roses Guitarist: Police Captain Who Gave Him Ride Resigns

The Las Vegas police captain who gave a helicopter ride to a Guns N' Roses guitarist as part of an elaborate marriage proposal has resigned from the department rather than face a demotion, authorities said.

Capt. David O’Leary and Officer Ray Horsley misused department resources when they took Daren Jay “DJ” Ashba and his girlfriend for an Aug. 7 flight on the chopper and dropped the pair off in a field near police headquarters where Ashba proposed, according to an internal police investigation, the Las Vegas Sun reported. O’Leary was set to be demoted to the rank of lieutenant but resigned instead. Horsley will be booted from the Air Support Detail and can no longer fly for the department.

Rides aboard police helicopters generally are done to educate the public about the Air Support Detail.

The development was a topic of tweets today on Twitter.

Police may never have known about the incident had Ashba not posted a photo on Instagram of himself and Colombian actress Nathalia Henao wearing helicopter gear and thanking the department for “the most amazing private helicopter tour over the city,” The Associated Press reported.

Ashba called the aerial tour of the city that ended with his proposal “magical,” adding, “And thanks to our good friends for helping making it all happen!!”

Ahsba and Henao married in September.

Police officials were not amused.

“A fly along and a patrol ride are typically done for the purpose of exposing members of the community to the duties of law enforcement,” read a statement from the department. “A fly along would begin and terminate at Air Support and would not include any off site landings as occurred in this case.”
