Baby Born at Grocery Store That Luckily Delivers

A baby was born at a California grocery store where quick action by the owner and the butcher made for a safe delivery.

The pregnant woman, who was not named, was shopping at El Parian market in Fresno on Tuesday evening when she began screaming, store owner Issamar Sepulveda told The Washington Post.

"I heard her scream, 'Oh my God, I think I'm having my baby," Sepulveda told the Post, adding they had only moments to react. "It happened in like seconds. … All of us were like, 'What is happening?'"

Sepulveda and butcher Alberto Casias got on the floor with the woman and Casias caught the child with his burgundy apron, the Post said, and Sepulveda cut umbilical cord with a pair of scissors when she saw it wrapped around the baby's neck.

"I thought, 'What if the baby dies right here because I'm not doing this right?'" she told the newspaper.

Paramedics came in moments later to take the child, but Sepulveda and her husband, Juan Damian, said the frantic scene still sticks with them.

"It was insane," Damian, a co-owner of the store, told the Post.

The couple told the newspaper that they knew the woman as a regular customer and visited her and the child at the hospital. The boy, named Toby, weight eight pounds, they told the Post.

The incident was similar to woman giving birth at a grocery store in Halifax, Canada in April, according to CBC News.

That child was born in the washroom of the Atlantic Superstore to a woman who said she did not even know she was pregnant.

"I really had no idea," Ashleigh Miller-Cross told reporters, according to the CBC News. "I presumed I hadn't lost any weight because I only had Mia 10 months ago.... I didn't grow any extra. I was just the same size. I didn't have any cravings."

CBC News stated that assistant manager Malcolm Comeau and another employee assisted in that birth.

"I opened the door and Ashleigh was there and the baby was halfway out," Comeau told the CBC News. "She just screamed at me, 'I'm having a baby!' and I automatically grabbed my phone and dialed 911."
