Grizzly Smashes Glass at Zoo, but Four Other Layers Protect Patrons

A grizzly bear smashed the glass inside its exhibit in a Minnesota zoo Monday using a basketball-sized rock and terrifying onlookers.

“One of the bears had a rock about the size of a basketball and managed to break one of the windows,” Tony Fisher, director of animal collections for the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, told ABC News.

“At no time was there any danger of the bears getting out since there were still four layers of glass, but we’re not going to trust it,” he continued. “We thought we had all the rocks out of their exhibit but one of them dug it up somewhere.”

The exhibit that holds three bears from Alaska will remain closed until the zoo replaces the 2 and a half inch thick glass panel. The panel was similar to a car windshield in that it was designed to sustain impact. In this case, though, the glass just could not bear the rock’s impact as the animal repeatedly hit the panel.

The panel will reportedly cost thousands of dollars to replace.

Fisher is unsure which bear caused the commotion but says Kenai, a nearly full-grown male, is most likely the culprit. Kenai probably weighs between 800 to 900 pounds and is “usually the clown out there, fooling around in the water,” Fisher told the Star Tribune.

“He didn’t know what he was doing. He was just being a bear.”

Robin Ficker of Maryland was visiting the zoo around 9 a.m. when he saw “the bears wrestling with each other and looking at the people.”

“[The bear] picked up from the bottom of the pool a rock that had to weigh 50 pounds. And while many people were standing there, he slammed it against the glass several times,” Ficker told the Star Tribune. “He continued. It bounced off the wall and he caught it and did it again. He did it like five times . . . And I thought, 'These bears are coming out of there.”
