Dan Haggerty, who played mountain man Grizzly Adams on the popular 1970s television show, died Friday morning at the age of 74.
The bearded and beloved star of "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams," Haggerty was diagnosed with a spinal tumor in the summer of 2015, CNN reported
. His manager, Terry Bomar, said the actor received chemo and seemed to be doing better, but a spot was later found on his lung.
"I talked to him yesterday and told him we're praying for him," Bomar told CNN. "I told him 'I love you, man.' The last thing I heard him say was 'I love you.'"
Haggerty played Grizzly Adams in a movie of the same name as the television show, and the low-budget production became what CNN called a surprise hit. After that, he played the mountain man who befriends a bear on television for two seasons.
CNN said Haggerty's love for animals, portrayed on camera, was real off-stage, too, and before he was hired for the role, he owned a leopard, a cougar, and a tiger on the ranch he shared with his wife and daughters.
The announcement, after a week already filled with mourning David Bowie and actor Alan Rickman, was just too much for many people, who went online to share their grief.
This one hurts - sad to report that our buddy Dan Haggerty has lost his battle to cancer - he was always upbeat and his sense of humor was infectious - I will truly miss his laughter - RIP Grizzly Adams...
