The incident began when the suspect allegedly shot a man in a car outside the Kellum law firm. Then he crossed the street and reportedly
shot three more people in the Wal-Mart parking lot, according to WNCT-9 in North Carolina. A witness told the station she kept hearing police tell the suspect to stay down and put his hands up, but he kept moving around until officers moved in with an SUV.
Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden told the station that officers responded within minutes of the shooting calls, and said that their training in mass shootings "likely prevented a larger crime scene with multiple, multiple victims." He said the guman had used a pistol-grip shotgun with an unknown number of rounds.
Kellum practices personal injury law and has nine offices in eastern North Carolina, the AP reported. The law firm declined to comment on the shooting.
The victims and the suspect were taken to a Vidant Medical Center, where
they all were undergoing surgery, according to USA Today.
No one inside the Walmart or the Toys “R” Us stores was harmed in the shooting.
The motive for the shooting is still unknown.
Neighborhood Scout shows the violent crime rate in Greenville to be 6.5 per thousand residents, compared with an average of 3.5 per thousand in North Carolina and 3.9 per thousand nationally.
