A great white shark was spotted near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay over the weekend, where it devoured a sea lion in a bloody display caught on camera by tourists.

"This is the first recorded predation event I know of in the San Francisco Bay," David McGuire, a research associate at the California Academy of Sciences who directs the San Francisco-based conservation group Shark Stewards, told The San Francisco Chronicle.

"It definitely looks like a white shark, about eight to 10 feet, from the phone video sent to us. The tourists were pretty excited."

The recording itself was shot by YouTube user Meredith Coppolo Shindler, who can be heard gasping and exclaiming alongside other onlookers as the shark's fin emerged from a bloody plume in the baywater.

"It’s Jaws! It’s Jaws!" shouts one boy in the video. "That’s the awesomest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!"

Scientists and naturists have long spotted sharks and monitored sharks inside the San Francisco Bay, but they rarely spot them inside of the Golden Gate area.

Some have guessed that this year’s El Niño could be driving more sharks further north, while others say it's just one of those rare happenings.

Members of the Dolphin Swimming Club, who are training for a race in the very spot the video was shot, expressed concern about the footage to KGO-TV.

"It was scary to see a big pool of blood in the water, definitely scary," said San Francisco resident Ryan Dalton. "It's something that you don't want to think about while you're in the water."

"Lifeguards will post if there's a sign," said McGuire. "And look at nature. Look at the circling of birds, if there's a lot of activity under the water, if seals are swimming away quickly you should probably get out of the water because there's may be a shark preying."
