The Grand Ole Opry is expanding to New York City with plans to create a Times Square music venue and restaurant called Opry City Stage.

The Tennessean newspaper reported that the Opry City Stage is probably the first of several country music-themed venues that Ryman Hospitality Properties is planning to open across the United States in what organizers hope will increase leisure tourists coming to Nashville as well.

The Times Square four-story Opry City Stage will include simulcasts of "Opry" performances, The Tennessean reported. The newspaper said Ryman Hospitality is also eyeing Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Orlando as possible Opry City Stage locations.

"For 91 years the Grand Ole Opry has connected country music fans with their favorite artists through live performances, radio and more recently, digital technology," Colin Reed, chairman and chief executive officer of Ryman Hospitality Properties said in a statement.

"Opry City Stage is all about taking the diverse sounds that originate in Nashville to other markets so that fans have another way to discover new artists and connect with the music they love. We believe that once our Opry City Stage guests get a taste for all the Grand Ole Opry and Nashville have to offer, they are going to want to visit Music City and experience it for themselves," Reed added.

The Ryman statement said that Opry City Stage will make its debut on Times Square next April and will include live entertainment, a two-floor bar and restaurant, a world-class listening room and a space for private events on the fourth floor.

"The fourth-floor listening room will feature an array of programming, including curated performances from Music City's famed songwriting epicenter, the Bluebird Cafe, made possible by a licensing agreement between Ryman Hospitality Properties and the Nashville Songwriters Association International," said the Ryman statement.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, the Grand Ole Opry hit the airways as the WM Barn Dance in 1925 and settled on Nashville's Ryman Auditorium as its permanent home shortly afterward. The opry played at the Ryman for 31 years before moving the Grand Ole Opry House in 1974.

"The Opry has always enjoyed a warm welcome in New York City, and we believe Opry City Stage will appeal to both New Yorkers and tourists who will now be able to hear authentic country music in one of the world's most famous entertainment centers," Reed said in his statement.
