Gotham Awards 2017: 'Call Me by Your Name,' 'Get Out' Recognized

The Gotham Independent Film Awards for 2017 took place on Monday evening in New York, recognizing the top indie filmmakers of the year, E! News noted.

The prestigious event was hosted by John Cameron Mitchell and was attended by various A-listers including Nicole Kidman and Dustin Hoffman, who received Gotham award tributes, and Al Gore, who received a Gotham humanitarian tribute, according to a media statement by the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP).

"Call Me by Your Name" took top honors at the prestigious event, bagging the overall best feature award, Vanity Fair noted.

The drama is directed by Luca Guadagnino and stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet as lovers in Italy.

"We started this film many, many years ago—many," Guadagnino said upon receiving the award, according to Vanity Fair. "I'm not used to winning things."

The film also earned Chalamet the breakthrough actor award for his performance that The Hollywood Reporter described as "stealthily devastating, masterfully modulated."

Jordan Peele's horror drama, "Get Out," was another firm favorite at the ceremony, scooping up several awards including best director and best screenplay and the audience award, Deadline reported.

Other standout's at the event included James Franco, who was awarded as best actor for his performance in "The Disaster Artist," and Saoirse Ronan, who earned an award as best actress for her portrayal of a high school senior in "Lady Bird," Variety said.

According to Deadline, the event featured two additionally noteworthy awards: the special jury award for ensemble performance, which was handed to the cast of "Mudbound," and the made in New York award, which was received by Michael Kenneth Williams.

  • Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award: Jordan Peele, "Get Out"
  • Best Screenplay: "Get Out," Jordan Peele
  • Best Actress: Saoirse Ronan, "Lady Bird"
  • Best Actor: James Franco, "The Disaster Artist"
  • Breakthrough Actor: Timothée Chalamet, "Call Me by Your Name"
  • Breakthrough Series, Long Form: "Atlanta"
  • Breakthrough Series, Short Form: "The Strange Eyes of Dr. Myes"
  • Made in New York Appreciation Award: Michael Kenneth Williams
  • Audience Award: "Get Out"
