Google Maps’ cupcake calorie counter is being yanked after the feature drew a not-so-sweet public response.

The idea behind the concept was simple enough — to let users know how many calories they could be burning if they decided to walk instead of drive a route, The Washington Post noted.

To solidify this point, the tool then converted the amount of calories into how many mini cupcakes could potentially be burned off by walking.

"This walk burns around 313 Calories — that's almost 3 mini cupcakes," a message within the app's walking directions read, according to CNN.

The feature was introduced last week as a test to some iOS users but a Google rep has since told Tech Crunch that the app was being pulled following "strong user feedback."

While some expressed positive feedback to the concept, stating it was a good form of motivation to be more active, many said it could lead to an unhealthy obsession over calorie consumption and physical activity and serve as a trigger to eating disorders.

"This can definitely be harmful," Courtney Simpson, a doctoral candidate in psychology at the Virginia Commonwealth University, said, according to Mic.

"Inherently, by tying numbers to food, it can cause some type of obsession over walking and burning calories."

Simpson further explained that, according to research, individuals with diagnosed eating disorders "tend to be very obsessive about these numbers."

Samantha DeCaro, assistant clinical director of the Renfrew Center for Eating Disorders in Philadelphia, added that "even just small comments — talk of weight, calories, dieting — can trigger eating disorder thoughts and can send someone back into disordered behavior," according to Mic.
