Golden Krust Founder Kills Himself in Bakery

Golden Krust founder Lowell Hawthorne reportedly killed himself Saturday afternoon by shooting himself in the head at his office inside his bakery and warehouse in the Bronx, a source told the New York Post.

Hawthorne, 57, was the founder and owner of the Jamaican meat-pie empire that had spread to 120 stores in nine states, according to the New York Daily News. He had been featured on the CBS series "Undercover Boss" in 2016.

Sources said Lowell, a married father of three sons and a daughter, was found on the floor of his office with a single bullet wound to his head and a handgun lying nearby, the New York Post reported.

A source told the Post that surveillance video showed Hawthorne shooting himself after speaking with two workers who left the room before the incident. The Post said one of employees could be seen making a cellphone call after the shooting to 911, the source told the tabloid.

The Daily News wrote that court records revealed that Hawthrone was deep in tax debt and was being sued by a former staffer for thousands in lost wages. A police source told to the newspaper that Hawthorne was concerned about the liens, which included more than $150,000 in city taxes on the company's buildings.

Ex-employee Robert Wray had charged in federal court in May that Hawthorne never paid him for the overtime he worked during his 11-year tenure. The lawsuit said more than 100 other Golden Krust staffers were also shorted overtime.

"Does not make any sense whatsoever," employee Pat Russo told the Daily News. "The one thing I learned a long time ago: You just don't know what you think you know."

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Brooklyn U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke expressed their sadness about Hawthrone's passing on Twitter.

Hawthrone, a Jamaican native, opened his first store in 1989 and along with his own outlets sold its beef patties in more than 20,000 supermarkets, along with city school system, state penal system and U.S. military, the Post said.
