Capt. John R. Nettleton, the man in charge of the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, was fired on Wednesday after investigators alleged an affair with a woman whose husband was recently found floating dead in the ocean.

According to ABC News, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has been investigating the mysterious death of Christopher Tur, 42, a civilian employee at the Navy Exchange, since his body was fished from the water on January 10. He had been reported missing the day before.

Initial signs pointed to a suicide, CNN reported, however no official cause of death has been determined.

Nettleton's alleged affair with Tur’s wife, Lara, the director of the Fleet and Family Services Center at the base, came to light during the death investigation.

Rear Adm. Mary M. Jackson, commander of Navy Region Southeast, did not give a reason for Nettleton's relief other than citing a "loss of confidence in Nettleton's ability to command." Nettleton has been transferred to Jackson’s staff at Navy Region Southeast in Jacksonville, Florida.

Capt. Scott Gray, Jackson’s chief of staff, has been assigned acting commanding officer in Guantanamo Bay.

As commander of the naval base, Nettleton had no role in the operation of the Guantanamo Bay detention center, which President Barack Obama vowed once again to close during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night.
