A girl trapped in a cave for 10 hours Thursday while on a field trip was rescued by San Antonio fire officials, KENS-TV reported.

The girl, a student at the Legacy of Educational Excellence High School, became struck in the Robber Baron Cave just south of the San Antonio International Airport on Thursday afternoon, fire officials told the television station.

The 18-year-old student became lodged in an area called the "Hole in the Floor" 350 feet into the cave, according to MySanAntonio.com. Joe Arrington, public information officer for San Antonio Fire Department said that the area has a "narrow circular opening that you have to pass through."

Arrington told the website that the teen's torso was stuck but she managed to keep her arms and feet free. KENS-TV wrote that about 70 rescuers worked in 20-minute shifts in the tight space in an effort to free the teenager until she was freed about 11:45 p.m.

"She told her mom, 'I didn't want to die in there.'" San Antonio fire chief Charles Hood, told the television station. "She is conscious. She is alert. She is a trooper. She is in very good spirits considering what she has been through."

KENS-TV said experienced cavers were with the students and they worked for an hour trying to free the girl before calling on San Antonio firefighters.

MySanAntonio.com wrote that rescue workers secured the girl to a harness that kept her in place as they chiseled at the rock that trapped her. The crew also placed cribbing and an air cushion beneath her to support her legs.

"As she had been in there for a while she has lost some leg strength," Hood told MySanAntonio.com. "We have continued to keep her warm, to keep her fed, to monitor her vitals."

Firefighters encountered tough limestone in the chipping away at the rock along with the fear of the girl slipping further down the cave, which added to the time of the rescue, per MySanAntonio.com.
