Girl Shot in Yellowstone Dies: Bullet From Dad's Gun Kills 3-year-old

A 3-year-old girl shot in Yellowstone National Park over the weekend died from a bullet from her father’s pistol, Reuters reported.

The girl, whose name has not been released, couldn’t be revived by emergency responders who were called to a campsite after the girl’s mother called dispatchers and said her daughter had shot herself, Reuters said.

Park authorities have not commented on whether the shooting was accidental.

“We don’t have all of the information, and we haven’t drawn any conclusions,” a park spokesperson told The Associated Press.

The little girl was from Idaho and was killed at the Grant Village Campground, the AP said.

It is the first shooting fatality in Yellowstone since 1978, the Tribune said, and the first child shooting death since 1938 when a 13-year-old accidentally shot himself with a rifle.

It’s only been in the last three years that people could carry guns into Yellowstone, when a federal law eliminated a ban that kept visitors to national parks from possessing firearms. No hunting is allowed in most national parks, including Yellowstone.
