A Girl Scout sold 300 boxes of cookies outside a marijuana shop in San Diego on Saturday, sparking a fierce debate about whether her clever sales tactic was in violation of Girl Scout rules.

The unidentified girl set up shop outside marijuana dispensary Urbn Leaf, and made the lucrative sales in just over six hours, her father told KGTV.

The New York Times estimated that, with boxes selling for as much as $5 in parts of the U.S., the Girl Scout was likely to have raised more than $1,500 by the end of the day.

However, when Urbn Leaf posted a photo of the girl holding boxes of cookies outside its Mission Bay storefront, it drew some raised eyebrows from the public.

"Why in the hell would you put you little girl out in front of a drug shop?" one person replied to the post.

"I think the girl scouts of America are going to have a problem," another pointed out.

Maryl Doyle, director of communications for Girl Scouts San Diego told The San Diego Union-Tribune that Girl Scouts were only permitted to set up booths outside commercial establishments if they had received permission from business owners on an approved list.

The issue is that Urbn Leaf "is not on the approved booth site list."

Doyle said that it was not a cut-and-dried situation because the girl's identity was unknown, therefore no investigations could be launched, but she said that the organization would speak to the family should it ever emerge who the girl was.

Mike Lopes, a spokesman for the Girl Scouts of the USA noted that the incident was a "community issue," and that it was "not any different than selling in front of any other kind of shop," according to The New York Times.

"It just happens to be a marijuana dispensary," he said.
