A baby girl abducted from the hospital eight hours after her birth has been found 18 years later and reunited with her birth family.
Originally named Kamiyah Mobley, the infant was kidnapped by Gloria Williams, who was posing as a nurse at University Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida, and taken to Walterboro, South Carolina, where she was raised, according to The Associated Press. Although a massive search was undertaken at the time of the abduction, Mobley was never found.
A few months ago, Mobley became suspicious that she had been kidnapped. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children became involved and performed a DNA test on Mobley, who was living under the name Alexis Manigo, the AP reported.
The DNA test confirmed that the girl was the missing child of Shanara and Craig Mobley abducted 18 years earlier. Shanara was only 16 when Kamiyah was born, and Craig was in jail because Shanara had been 15 when Kamiyah was conceived, according to the New York Daily News.
Williams was arrested for kidnapping and will appear in court Friday in South Carolina, the New York Daily News reported.
The Mobleys and grandmother Velma Aiken spoke to Kamiyah over FaceTime and were excited to be reunited, even virtually, after all this time. Aiken witnessed the abduction 18 years ago and had been worrying and praying for her ever since, said the NY Daily News.
“Nobody works miracles but God, I know now that he heard my prayers,” Aiken told the New York Daily News.
Shanara never forgot about her lost child, and used to put a piece of birthday cake in tin foil in the freezer every year on Kamiyah’s birthday, according to Newsday.
