An 8-year-old girl died on a cruise ship on Saturday after she plunged 20 feet from the interior atrium to a lower deck.

CNN noted that the Carnival Glory cruise ship had returned from its voyage and was docked at Port Miami when the child fell.

The girl was transported to the nearby Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where she died.

"The ship's medical team responded immediately and the child was transported to the ship's medical center," Carnival Cruise Lines spokeswoman Jayme Eglin said, according to The Washington Post.

Meanwhile, staff on board alerted the Miami-Dade police.

While details surrounding the incident are still being investigated, Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Capt. Ignatius Carroll said "we understand that the child may have fallen 20 or so feet from a landing," CNN reported.

Local 10 News identified the girl Zion Smith of the Bahamas, who was on the cruise ship with her baby brother, mother and boyfriend as well as his family.

Speaking to the news channel, Smith's great uncle Damien Fox described the child as a happy, loving, active and playful straight-A student.

"We are here in Miami to find answers, to find what happened aboard the ship," he said.

Fox said family members on board the ship believe the fall could have occurred after several people pushed and shoved to get out of an elevator, causing Smith to fall over the deck's railing.

He added that the family would be pursuing legal action.

"We just need some justice and we need some answers," Fox told Local 10 News.

"Once we get that, we can move forward."
